Council launches dedicated support to those most in need of help with self-isolation

An emergency response for people living in west Cheshire has been launched to support those vulnerable groups at higher risk from serious complications as a result of COVID 19 infection.

The government is now advising people with the most serious underlying conditions to remain in strict isolation, to protect themselves and the NHS.  Councils across the country have now established local hubs, to support people to access food, medical supplies and social support. This has been achieved by co-ordinating work between front-line council and NHS staff, partner agencies, local and national businesses and volunteers. Over 1500 people have responded to Cheshire West and Chester’s call for a community response, to help ensure that physical distancing doesn’t need to mean social isolation.

People in the most vulnerable groups, based on their medical condition, are being contacted by the government, and referred onto help from their local council if they can’t meet their needs with the help of friends and families.  The first packages of support have now been received.

A wider group of local people may also need support to protect themselves from the virus.  Cheshire West and Chester Council have therefore launched a dedicated helpline 0300 123 7031 which will run 7 days a week from 8am to 7pm.   The helpline will provide advice and support, and where necessary make arrangements for food, medicines and social contact.  You can also email  enquiries@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk

STAY AT HOME, PROTECT THE NHS, SAVE LIVES

A recent incident in the Co-op highlighted one of the biggest problems we are facing – PEOPLE ARE STILL SHOPPING TOO FREQUENTLY.

Everyone should be aiming to go to the shops just once or twice a week – not daily.

We all have to change our habits – going to the shops for a daily paper is not essential – it puts the shopper, other shoppers and shop staff at risk of catching the coronavirus.   Daily papers can be delivered by NewsTeam and other suppliers.

Government advice is clear – STAY AT HOME, PROTECT THE NHS, SAVE LIVES.

Our Co-op store, also incorporating the Post Office, is small and management have looked at the options of ‘one in one out’, creating a one way system, etc. but none of these would work with the store as it is laid out.

Staff are provided with PPE – they all have gloves, sanitiser and wipes which are also by self service tills.  Over the coming days checkouts will be fitted with perspex screens to protect staff and shoppers.

From tomorrow there will be door monitoring to ensure that there are only 10 customers at any one time in store. Unfortunately this will include the Post Office so the wait will depend on what customers are doing or buying. This decision has been made based on comments from the public. It will also affect the stock refilling pace as a member of staff will have to stay by the door.

In addition, posters about social distancing will be displayed in the Co-op tomorrow to remind shoppers.

Our Co-op team are risking themselves by turning up every day to serve us and are doing their very best in extremely difficult circumstances.   We should be very grateful.

STAY AT HOME, PROTECT THE NHS, SAVE LIVES

How to get coronavirus support as or for a clinically extremely vulnerable person

Anyone who is considered a clinically extremely vulnerable person can register for food deliveries via this link https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus-extremely-vulnerable.  I understand that food parcels are being delivered to this most vulnerable group of people now or will happen imminently.

If you have a medical condition which makes you extremely vulnerable to coronavirus (COVID-19), you should register with the government and tell them whether or not you need support.

You may have received a letter from the NHS telling you that you’re clinically extremely vulnerable, or been contacted by your GP or hospital clinician. If this has not happened by Monday 30 March, contact your GP or clinician after you register with this service.

It may take time for any support offered through this service to arrive. Wherever possible you should continue to rely on friends, family and wider support to help you meet your needs.

You can register yourself, or on behalf of someone else.

Cheshire West & Chester Council Advice

For those people who are not considered clinically extremely vulnerable, please follow this link

This information is being added to daily as more help is offered.

Westminster Park Gardening Club’s Advice during ‘lock-down’

We have enjoyed glorious weather over the first few days of ‘lockdown’ and most of us will be very grateful to be able to get into the garden for fresh air, exercise and the pleasure in seeing new life return to our sodden soil.

However, even gardens are not exempt from the challenges of Covid-19 and hopefully the following tips will help.

  1. Don’t worry about collecting grass cuttings when mowing the lawn. Our green bins are no longer being collected so just take the collection box off the mower and leave the grass cuttings to provide a useful mulch on the lawn. You may need to mow more frequently to avoid the ‘hay meadow’ look but this is a win/win situation: increased exercise and soil improvement too!

  1. Compost all your garden waste. Even if you don’t have a compost bin or heap, a tidy pile in a corner of the garden will soon start to break down and provide useful organic matter. Larger woody items will just have to be stored until things return to normal.

  1. Garden supplies. Many of the online plant and seed suppliers are still working, e.g. Thompson & Morgan. The Grosvenor Garden Centre will deliver and Morton’s Dairies can deliver compost with the milk. It’s also worth trying to germinate all those old seeds we have saved over the years – they are surprisingly viable even after many years.

  1. Please be a good neighbour – if you notice a neighbour struggling to keep their garden under control if, for example, they are ill or their regular gardener is not visiting, then please help out where you can. Just follow the social distancing guidelines.

Stay safe and keep gardening – there shouldn’t be a single weed left in Westminster Park!

Bumpers Lane tip closed

As of last Monday, Bumpers Lane tip was closed, so I’m afraid that you will have to store all of your green waste at home until it reopens.  As we are stuck at home and the weather is beautiful, I know that many of you will be out in the garden tidying up after our wet winter, generating lots of waste.  Maybe it’s time to make a compost heap!
