Attempted Burglary & Health Screening

We have just received this from Jim Moffat:

Nick, I have just been made aware that on Thursday evening, between 1730 and 1930, thiefs attempted to crowbar open the front double glazed door of a house in Lower Field Road. They were unsuccessful in gaining entry but obviously caused some damage to the door. Neighbours had not noticed or heard anything

The police have been made aware of this and it is possible the thiefs used the ploy of appearing to be delivering free newspapers so they didn’t attract attention. It is also possible that as the residents own a local business that they were specifically targeted by the thiefs thinking there may be money from the business in the house.

It also appears that Asian families are being targeted by thiefs due to their cultural habit of having gold jewellery and trinkets in the house.

Could you please put something on the website about this and pass on to fellow Home Watch Co-ords. The following Also is worthy of note

NHS AAA Screening Programme for males over 65

There appears to be a distinct lack of publicity to the fact that the NHS has introduced a screening programme for abdominal aortic aneurysms for males at the age of 65. Males over the age of 65 can be prone to these and a simple ultrasound scan can check if you have one.

The programme will invite all males for screening during the year they turn 65. However if you are over 65 you can approach the regional coordination offices in your area to self refer yourself for checking (aaa.screening.nhs.uk) If you are online and Google the NHS AAA screening programme you can select your area and get the contact number for your area or you can email aaa.screening@nhs.net. Of course you could always make enquiries with your GP.

I have been monitoring the introduction phase in of this programme for when Chester went active and have just had my screening check at Western Avenue Health Clinic in Blacon. It is painless and takes about 20 mins to carry out and you are given the results there and then.

I have asked a number of fellow over 65’s males if they were aware of this programme and they pleaded ignorance to it. I feel we should publicise both on our website and in the next newsletter. Could you pease pass this on to the Committee also.

 Regards

 Jim Moffat

Volunteers needed

I am writing to ask if you would like to volunteer to help with a very exciting project in Lache Primary School (and others). I run a service that provides schools with well trained and supported volunteers who work one to one with children who need the attention of an adult to help them to learn to communicate effectively, listen and read. Our project is all about giving children a love of books and reading but we also do many other activities with the children much as a very interested grandparent or aunt/uncle might do. Our volunteers go into school twice a week for an hour and a half and work one to one with three children. They see the same children each time so they build up a very special relationship with their little groups. The children really love their sessions and the results to date have been excellent. We are already working with over 40 children and the school now want another 10 volunteers. The volunteers don’t need any special experience as they are well trained, supported and resourced. They just need to be able to make a child feel special. All the volunteers love the work that they do and the difference that they make is sometimes life changing.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and they are all ages and both men and women. Consistency, reliability and passion are the things that we ask of them and  in return they can expect to be supported, well appreciated and feel that they have made a real difference to a child’s life. Please let me know if you could help.

Many thanks

Diane Clark

Fifty-one representations handed in to CWaC from meeting attendees

Thank you to all residents (members and non-members) that filled our community centre hall on 29th October, just a few days before the CWaC Local Plan deadline for representations. Fifty-one representations were hand delivered to CWaC the following day, and we know many more of you submitted via post directly or used email. At a last count on the CWaC portal, over 500 representations had been received, and based on some name checking I don’t think this is all of them yet…

Keep in touch,

Mark Sams

The local plan is not legally compliant because there is no HRA to save our newts

Westminster Park’s local wildlife includes Great Crested Newts have been seen in both Winkwell Field and the marl pits in the Greenbelt land that the Council wish to handover to developers.

Great Crested Newts are internationally important species of conservation concern as described on this Cheshire Biodiversity web site – http://www.cheshire-biodiversity.org.uk/action-plans/listing.php?id=34

Specific actions plans for Great Crested Newt conservation are documented at http://ukbars.defra.gov.uk/archive/plans/lbap_complete_plan.asp?X={5C19A854-E33D-459E-98A2-DD28A91EE8BB}&LBAP={2CF2A1EE-9AE6-4436-ABA7-21E8B659574D}&CO=

There is no evidence in the Local Plan for conservation or an impact assessment for bio-diversity when re-designating this Greenbelt land, i.e. a Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) in accordance with the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010.

NOTE: There is a ‘Habitats Regulations Assessment Screening Report – June 2013.pdf” as a part of the plan, but it does NOT cover the Greenbelt land next to Wrexham Road and the importance of the marl pits to our Great Crested Newts.

You have until 5pm tomorrow to save our Great Crested Newts – Please send this additional information (below) to spatialplanning@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk

Dear Spatial Planning Team,

The local plan is NOT LEGALLY COMPLIANT because there is no evidence in the Local Plan that a Habitats Regulations Assessment has been carried out in accordance with the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 given that Great Crested Newts are known by residents to be living in the marl pits on this Greenbelt land.

Kind Regards,

This is the latest (2013) draft plan for Dee Valley water plans for water supply requirements for the local plan period.

The link for appendix E is via their web site:

Check out their population estimations and point 2.4 the required need for Chester from the chief planner.  Interestingly it also includes information for Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham.
